Haven’s Book Nook
Your Story Matters
Representation in literature has a lasting impact — especially for young readers. When children and teens see characters who reflect their identities and experiences, it affirms their sense of self, fosters belonging, and contributes to confidence and academic success. For marginalized communities, including LGBTQIA+ youth and children of color, these stories are more than just books, they’re a source of visibility and validation.
Yet during the 2023–2024 school year, Florida was among the states with the highest number of book bans. Many of the targeted titles centered on underrepresented voices: 36% featured characters of color, and 25% included LGBTQIA+ characters. More than half (54%) of the LGBTQIA+ books banned also featured characters of color.
This troubling trend highlights the growing gap in access to inclusive and affirming literature.
At Haven Community Church, we believe every child deserves to see themselves in the stories they read. That’s why we’re building a library for youth and families—especially those from marginalized communities. Our goal is to offer a safe, enriching collection that celebrates diversity, promotes empathy, and reminds every reader that they matter.
Affirming Bible Study
"the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." — 1 Samuel 16:7
One in five adults in the United States suffer from religious trauma and a large portion of that statistic are members of the LGBTQIA+ community. The trauma associated with religious rejection can lead to suicidal tendencies and mental health issues.
Our Affirming Bible Study invites LGBTQIA+ individuals, families, and allies to explore scripture through a lens of love, inclusion, and truth. Together, we:
Reclaim and Affirm Our Faith
We challenge harmful interpretations of scripture and uncover messages of liberation, affirmation, and divine love that speak to the LGBTQIA+ experience. This study helps participants reconcile faith with identity in a meaningful, authentic way.
Build Community and Belonging
This is a safe, supportive space to connect, grow, and share. Whether you're LGBTQIA+ or an ally, you'll find a welcoming community that values your story and encourages spiritual exploration without judgment.
Promote Understanding and Inclusion
We learn together, deepen our understanding, and advocate for justice within the church and beyond—empowering each other to live out our faith with integrity and compassion.
