Healthy Beginnings

Supporting New & Expecting Parents Through Nutrition and Community

Why We Exist

No baby should be born into hunger.

Food insecurity during pregnancy and postpartum can lead to serious health risks — for both parent and child. Healthy Beginnings empowers families with the nutrition, wellness resources, and support they need to thrive.

Why It Matters:

  • Nutrition is directly tied to birth outcomes, infant development, and postpartum recovery.

  • Families with young children experience food insecurity at nearly double the rate of the general population.

  • Black and Indigenous birthing people are 2–3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes, many of which are preventable with improved support systems.

  • Mental health issues like postpartum depression are significantly higher in food-insecure homes.

Healthy Beginnings is about more than food — it's about hope, health, and community connection.

  • At Haven Community Church, we believe that every parent deserves a supported and healthy start to their journey — and that no baby should be born into hunger.

  • The Healthy Beginnings Nutrition Program is an extension of Haven’s Community Kitchen and is built around the unique needs of pregnant people and new parents. The program provides monthly kits filled with nutrition-forward, culturally competent, and dignity-centered support items to help alleviate stress and improve health outcomes.
